Zombie folklore originated in Haiti.

Though we tend to think of them as cinematic creations, zombies predate motion pictures and can be traced back to Haitian folklore, which is itself rooted in African religious practices. According to the mythos, dead people can be brought back to life by voodoo sorcerers known as bokors. The zombie (originally spelled “zombi”) was first written about in America in an 1838 article called “The Unknown Painter” published by the Alton Telegraph. In it, a person enslaved by the Spanish artist Bartolome Esteban Murillo claimed that a “zombi” made nightly appearances in Murillo’s studio to work on his apprentices’ paintings, a fantastical notion that was dismissed.
