This imaginary latitudinal line marks the northernmost point where the sun can be seen directly overhead at noon, though it happens just once a year during the summer solstice in June, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The Tropic of Cancer was named around 2,000 years ago. At the time, the sun appeared in the constellation Cancer during the June solstice. (It has since shifted to the Taurus constellation, but the name stuck.) This line also marks the northern edge of the tropics, the warm, humid band that covers almost 40% of the planet's surface. The Tropic of Cancer passes through 16 countries, including Mexico, Egypt, India, and China.
