Captain's Log - 7/28

Hi friends! 

 

Welcome to the Captain's Log, your monthly insider musings aboard the AE pirate ship…which is exactly what it feels like over here. Our Founder and Captain Awkward, Frances, is busy battening down the hatches so, as the newest member of the team, I'm honored to step in for this month's log. 

 

When I told people I was taking a job with a "cum sponge company," they were stoked for me. Not the response you expect? Let me explain. I graduated college ten years ago with a degree in Gender & Sexuality Studies, immediately set off to Ethiopia for a stint in the Peace Corps teaching sexual health and then somehow found my way into a series of fashion marketing jobs.

 

No hate to women's apparel - a girl's got to get dressed - but I wanted to help people have a better, safer time doing "undressed" types of activities.

 

Sometimes you don't find an immediate path into your passions. Sometimes you have to build up your toolkit so that when *the* opportunity comes along, you're ready. Sometimes you have to be open to other iterations of the path you imagined. 

 

I wanted to help people feel comfortable with sex. Doing it, talking about it, celebrating the best parts of it. Now I get to do that for thousands. I'm humbled by and appreciative of the vulnerability our fans have exhibited when they share about their intimate experiences, questions and concerns. 

 

And it's about more than cum sponges. Every social media post, advertisement or message you get from us is a labor of love and persistence. It's a lot easier to talk about and advertise sexual health products for men than it is for women, only adding to the shame and secrecy around them.
